Notes Regarding U.S. Army Deaths at Camp Sheridan, Enoch Jones Farmstead, Von Ormy, Texas

Camp Sheridan, Texas, a camp on the south bank of the Medina River at Enoch Jones
Farmstead near present Von Ormy, Texas, was occupied September 7-November 23, 1866 by the headquarters and seven troops of the Fourth Cavalry Regiment. Enoch Jones was a wealthy local land speculator, merchant, and farmer who in 1858 built on his farm one of the early Texas examples of a Greek Revival style mansion. The Fourth Cavalry came to San Antonio from Georgia in December 1865 and had been in camp for nine months at what they called San Antonio Springs at the head of the San Antonio River, before moving to the Medina River. The unit at Camp Sheridan was composed of sixteen officers and 690 enlisted men of Troops A, B, C, D, F, K, L, and M. The regiment was commanded by Colonel Lawrence P. Graham, however, he was on leave so the regiment was temporarily commanded by Major John P. Hatch.1
