EARLY HISTORY and OVERVIEW OF THE MONKEN FAMILY IN TEXAS

The Monken family and their descendants can trace their family history and heritage back to the early German immigrants into Texas in the 1840’s.  They are to be commended for retaining one of the early German homesteads in Texas as well as much of the original land obtained by the early Monken’s.  The progenitor of this family in Texas was Friedrich Monken and Christine Sauer and through them, their son, Bernard Monken and his wife, Elizabeth.  This history will focus on Bernard and his descendants.

Bernard Monken was born Dec. 19, 1834 in Germany to Friedrich Franz Monken (b. Oct. 1, 1799, Oestrich in Rheingau, Germany, died Dec. 7, 1883, Boerne, Kendall County, TX) and Christina Sauer Monken (b. abt. 1800, Germany - died 1846, Spring Creek, near Victoria, TX). Friedrich and Christine married on April 13, 1823 in Germany.   Bernard was the sixth child of seven children:  Elizabeth (1827 –1890,TX), Rosina AKA Rosalie (1826- 1846 near Seguin, TX), Heinrich (1828–1846, Peach Creek near Gonzales, TX), Katherine (1830 –1900 Comal Co, TX), Barbara, (1832 –1846, New Braunfels, TX),  and Maria (1840- 1924).
