The Herrera Portones

The Herrera Portones

A rare example of a Spanish Colonial gate or "porton". Skilled carpenters constructed this mesquite entry way, sizing it for one of the five San Antonio Missions. Part of a matching pair, it was excavated in 1984 on property once belonging to Texas Revolutionary patriots José Francisco Ruiz & Blas Herrera. Circumstantial evidence ties the gate to the Alamo (Mission San Antonio de Valero). Courtesy Adolph C. Herrera: photo be Patrick Keeely.
